Suggestions on how to use this play along:

1. Listen to the recording with the full band and follow along with the printed music.

2. Make note of the sound, feel, interactions, and dynamics of the drums. Then play along with the recording, minus the Drum part.

3. You will notice many instances where there are ensemble figures written. Focus on your ability to maintain a solid feel as you set up the figures and support the ensemble. Pay special attention to the long and short notes that the band plays and orchestrate your playing to reflect those nuances.

4. Try to create a flow with your feel. It should be consistent in attack and volume and provide a feeling of forward motion without rushing. The goal is to create a solid,

rhythmic foundation that drives the band firmly but gently. Ultimately, you’re in control of not only the speed at which the band plays, but how loud or soft it plays.

5. And finally, dig in, swing hard, and have some fun playing these great charts penned by Tom Kubis. I hope you have as much fun playing these as I did recording them.
